Sabrina Brouwers is a London based abstract artist whose practice is centred on geometric compositions and fundamental graphic design principles. Acquiring a post-graduate diploma in Graphic Design at the University of Art London, Sabrina attributes her unique aesthetic to her nomadic upbringing and intricate curiosity in spatial design. Her abstract paintings are a study of our physical surroundings; a journey through man-made landscapes and a visual response to the complexity of our natural environment. Sabrina introduces elementary architectural forms into her work to explore the psychological effects of simplicity, leaving the viewer to be guided through Sabrina’s own study of how we emotionally process the physical world around us.
“I like to reference the Bauhaus movement in my work where the Gestalt theory of visual perception emerged - the study of the therapeutic effects of order and simplicity. I am also very inspired by the architect and philosopher, Adolf Loos and the artistic process of Sol LeWitt.”
Behind the Work
“‘This painting brings together some of the key principles within the Gestalt theory, which explores the psychological effects of visual perception. By using solely a monochrome colour palette, I am stripping away any conversation between colour and shape allowing a deeper exploration of composition and technique. The offset of the painted composition, revealing an asymmetrical edge of raw canvas, creates a sense of discomfort, highlighting a psychological response to the asymmetric composition. The raw canvas boarder is a direct reference from print design technique, where crop marks, composition bleed and colour swatches are highlighted.”

Behind the Work
“This painting explored balance and asymmetry through the use of uneven shoes and colour blocks. The use of solely the three primary colours, red, blue and yellow, reference the fundamentals of colour theory. The painting is marked with small map symbols referencing geographical maps, and the faint blue line marks the ending of the painting process, revealing a simplified journey through the constructed ‘map’.”

Behind the Work
“This series of works on paper is an extension of my art practice, which is influenced by my Caribbean and Indian heritage. When I work on paper, the playful patterns and compositions start to emerge organically. The imperfect nature of the cotton rag informs my relaxed and folk style approach to the work. Each work contains simple motifs and references to the figure that illustrate real and imagined stories. This work in particular represents ideas of reflection and identity.”

Behind the Work
“This painting is part of a series that challenges the order and compositional balance that is normally seen within my work. Despite the base grid system if this painting, the shapes places within the composition are quite intuitive, following no regimented order. The title 'lost configuration' suggests the the chaos or confusion within this piece.”
