Manon Joly is a minimalist photographer hailing from Toulouse, France.With three academic degrees in Economics, Statistics and Marketing, Manon’s artistic career emanates from somewhat unconventional roots. Her photography is methodical in approach yet conveys a deep emotional appreciation for our personal interactions and physical surroundings. Manon focuses on visual and textural sensations within her photographs, using colour, line and form to articulate such intimate detail. As a result, her work offers a fresh perspective on modern human intimacy and architectural discoveries, inviting us to assess our own interpretation of both person and place.
“Inspired by what’s around me, I focus my artwork on recreating my feelings and personal sensations. My aim is to transmit my story with creativity, imagination and sensitivity. You don’t have to go far to find inspiration and beautifulness, everything is with you, you just have to look for it.”

“This photograph personally resonates with me on an artistic level, as it marks the start of my street photography series. It’s symbolic of my endless search for colour, form and composition in buildings across the world. As I was in a seaside town when I took this photo, the grooves in the middle represent the water that secured my surroundings. It was here where I realized the symbiotic relationship between buildings and their respective locations.”

“I love working with enigmatic subject matter when taking pictures of people. I like to create the illusion of misperception. Here it’s difficult to figure out how many people are actually involved, who they are or what’s their story. By adding the element of water, it allows me to create a reflection of their hands, almost like a meditative, intimate game.”

“If I had to choose a colour that best fits Spain, I would pick orange. Orange brings the feeling of the sun, the heat and the summer. The building is one of the most special residential buildings in the city, both in exterior and in interior. It was designed by the famous architect Fernando Higuera. His work is recognised worldwide as an original and interesting union of constructivist, rationalist and organic architecture.”

“Misleading sensuality is a common theme you can find in my more intimate photographs. By focusing in on such detail of the human body, such as this detail of a neck, the question of gender and its role within the image dissolves. I like to sometimes confuse the viewer, making them wonder: Is it a girl? Is it a boy? But in reality, who cares?”
